Power transformers are commonly used components in electronic products and are widely used due to their simplicity and ease of manufacture. There are two types of transformers: step-up transformers and step-down transformers (excluding impedance transformers and line matching transformers). They are also called linear transformers because they increase or decrease the original AC voltage proportionally and output it to the load for power supply.

In application, step-up transformers are mainly used in instruments and meters; For the power supply of electronic products, the majority are actually step-down transformers. Structurally, the transformer is composed of stacked silicon steel sheets and primary coils. The coil is mostly wound with enameled copper wire, and now it is also used with enameled aluminum wire.

For step-down transformers, their characteristics are: the primary input is 220V, the secondary output is low-voltage, the secondary current is small, the secondary current is large, and it will generate heat during operation. Transformers with different power and wire diameters have different levels of heat generation.

Nowadays, transformer manufacturers choose copper or aluminum wire winding based on customers' different purposes and products, which is prone to the following problems: when the equipment is working, it generates a lot of heat, and the temperature can reach 70-80 ° C. However, transformers can work, but the paint of the enameled wire is prone to aging, cracking, moisture leakage, or wire to wire sparking, which greatly shortens the service life of the transformer.

In terms of material selection, manufacturers choose thinner copper wire or aluminum wire winding to save costs, making the transformer winding warm up faster; When there is a short circuit or high current in the secondary load circuit, the transformer will quickly overheat or cause the transformer to burn out. These problems were often solved by using glass fuses for overcurrent protection in the primary. At the same time, temperature fuses and bimetallic temperature controllers are also used for over temperature protection installed outside the transformer wire package. The use of disposable fuses can easily cause frequent replacement and inconvenience, and the use of bimetallic temperature controllers can easily cause the fault load to be reconnected under constant power, expanding the fault range.

To solve the problem of timely protection against overheating and overcurrent without replacing fuses or reconnecting faulty circuits after protection, currently only PPTC can achieve this goal.

PPTC, also known as self recovery fuse or ten thousand times fuse, can choose a desired model according to different circuits, current, voltage, and temperature requirements, and can be connected in series to the primary or secondary of the transformer. During normal operation, it is low resistance. When the transformer exceeds the specified temperature or current, it will instantly become high resistance, timely limiting the current of the circuit to achieve the purpose of protecting the transformer.
